Week 1 Multimedia Lesson

4.RL.3 Describe in depth a character, setting, or event in a story or drama, drawing on specific details in the text (eg., a characters thoughts, words, or actions).

Our read aloud right now is Julie of the Wolves by Jean Craighead George so this week for an art project we did a crayon resist wolf drawing. The goal was to connect the details we have learned about wolves from the text to the details of our drawings. We focused on the wolf pack leader, Amaroq.

To begin the lesson, I showed a short video clip of artist, Joel Hickerson, doing a step by step drawing a wolf. I then took the students through the process of drawing their own wolf character. As we drew, I asked students to recall details of Amaroq as evidence / reasoning to the details of our drawings.

What went well:
The clip added interest and created a great visual for students. Bringing in the text details helped students focus on the details of their drawings while giving them purpose for examining character details.

What would I do differently next time:
Technically-I would have borrowed the power box along with the speakers so the volume would have been louder. Minor technical naivety.
Academically-Next time I would like to use a graphic organizer to chart the details as we read. I would also like use my own art example to copy and have students label several character details with specific quotes from the book.
